Sometimes, a sore throat is just a sore throat. Other times, it’s a sign of strep bacteria. Strep throat is extremely contagious and can cause many different levels of discomfort for those suffering from it. With proper treatment, you can be feeling relief within a week or less. Some symptoms that may point to strep throat include:
- Sore throat or pain while swallowing
- Redness on the tonsils
- Fever
- Chills
- Swollen lymph nodes
Sore throats are common and can indicate something such as cold, allergies or viruses. This is different in that it is caused by a bacteria and can be treated by antibiotics. Dr. Lenkowski is well-versed in diagnosing and treating strep throat in his patients.
ENT specialists are trained to recognize the difference between a common sore throat due to environmental issues and something more serious, such as strep throat. Any physician can administer a strep test; however, only an ENT can help identify whether or not your issue may be a sign of a more invasive issue, such as persistent tonsillitis or an adenoid issue.
There are 2 primary tests for strep throat diagnosis:
- Rapid test: this test can identify a case of strep throat within minutes, and is done on-site.
- Culture test: this test requires 48 hours in order for a lab to test the culture that Dr. Lenkowski collects and sends off for confirmation.
If you do test positive for strep, Dr. Lenkowski will provide the best treatment option for your needs, in order to get you feeling better fast.
