LATERA®

Breathe Better With The Absorbable Nasal Implant

Nasal and Laryngeal Endoscopy

What is Latera?

Not being able to breathe correctly out of your nose is not only frustrating, but it can also negatively impact your quality of life. At ROVA ENT, we are proud to offer innovative and minimally invasive solutions such as the LATERA® Absorbable Nasal Implant to help you breathe better.

The LATERA® Absorbable Nasal Implant is inserted inside the nasal wall to reinforce the cartilage and keep the airway open. LATERA® acts as a stent, preventing nasal valve collapse and allowing the patient to breathe better. The implant is clear and comes in two sizes: 20mm and 24 mm. If he feels you are a good candidate, Dr. Lenkowski will select the best size for you based on your nose anatomy.

Who is a Good Candidate for Latera?

Patients who suffer from nasal airway obstruction symptoms (OSA) may benefit from the procedure, especially those who have been diagnosed with lateral nasal cartilage wall insufficiency (LWI) or other structural issues. The nasal passages collapse inward when an OSA patient breathes in, restricting airflow. Benefits include relief from common OSA symptoms, including:

  • Reduced nasal congestion
  • Decreased stuffiness
  • Easier nasal breathing, including during physical activity
  • Better sleeping
  • Less nasal obstruction
  • Less trouble breathing

Do I Have OSA?

If you think you could have OSA and benefit from the nasal implant procedure, take our sinus quiz. The quiz will evaluate your symptoms, and our team will reach out to you with the results.

What are the Benefits of Latera?

Latera can reduce common OSA symptoms without the need for invasive surgery or expensive medical devices. With reduced nasal blockage, breathing through the nose will become much easier, allowing you to sleep, exercise, and go about your day more easily.

What To Expect From Your LATERA® Procedure

The implant is placed in a minimally invasive outpatient procedure. Our sinus surgeon, Dr. Lenkowski, will get you comfortable and numb your nose with a local anesthetic. Once your nose is numb, he will then carefully insert the tube with the implant inside into the outer wall of your nose. Once in its desired place, the implant is released. It will sit above the maxilla, or right around where your glasses would sit on the bridge of your nose. Dr. Lenkowski will then comfortably raise the insertion tube. The entire insertion procedure only lasts for a few minutes and should not be painful, but patients might feel some slight pressure.

Recovering From Latera Absorbable Nasal Implant

There is very little to no downtime after LATERA®, which is considered a safe, effective procedure with relatively no risks or side effects. Some patients may experience some slight bruising, swelling, mild pain or irritation. Other patients experience none of these side effects. These symptoms will go away quickly, and you should be able to return to normal activities within a few days.

Though unlikely, call us at (540) 274-2461 if you experience any pain or bleeding.

Latera Results

The implant is slowly and safely absorbed over 18-24 months. As it absorbs, your nose forms tissue that will turn into collagen in the implant’s place, providing patients with long-lasting support and relief from OSA symptoms.

Many patients may be concerned that the implant will alter their appearance. However, LATERA® does not alter the shape or appearance of your face. No one will be able to tell you have had the procedure but you!
