What is a Nasal and Laryngeal Endoscopy?

A nasal or laryngeal endoscopy is a minimally-invasive diagnostic procedure performed using a local, topical anesthetic of the nasal or larynx passages. Endoscopic sinus surgery involves an endoscope, a flexible camera, passing through the nostril to provide a detailed view of the nasal passages, sinuses, and larynx.

Who is a Good Candidate for a Nasal and Laryngeal Endoscopy?

You may need a nasal or laryngeal endoscopy if you’ve had chronic problems with any of the following conditions:

  • Nasal blockage and drainage
  • Headaches
  • Facial pain, particularly around the sinuses and above the eyes
  • Chronic cases of sinusitis or sinus infections
  • Nosebleeds
  • Decreased sense of smell
  • Voice-related problems such as hoarseness, vocal fatigue, change in voice quality
  • Something stuck in your throat
  • Trouble breathing or swallowing
  • Earache that won’t go away
  • Possible cancer
  • Removing a growth
  • Nasal and sinus disorders

What are the Benefits of a Nasal Laryngeal Endoscopy?

An endoscopy can help your physician diagnose:

  • Tumors
  • Masses
  • Causes for unknown blockage
  • Deviated septum
  • Polyps
  • Congestion
  • Nasal and sinus infection
  • Causes of Nosebleeds
  • Loss of ability to smell

Other Uses of Nasal or Laryngeal Endoscopy

  • Nasal endoscopy can be used for removing a foreign object from the nasal and sinus passages.
  • Endoscopy can allow a doctor to see how treatment for a nose or sinus problem is working.
  • Rhinosinusitis is one of the most common reasons for nasal endoscopy because it can show what is causing an infection and how best to treat it.
  • Endoscopy is also used to do minimally invasive surgery to treat conditions such as sinus infection, nasal polyps, and nasal tumors without an external incision.

What to Expect During a Nasal and Laryngeal Endoscopy

An endoscopy procedure can be performed using local anesthesia. A thin, flexible tube with a live feed camera is inserted into the nasal passages to view the sinuses and larynx. Once your doctor has a complete picture of the nose and sinuses, they can discuss treatment options and a possible surgical procedure.
